J.S. Bach: Complete Organ Works, Vol VIII

Volume VIII of J.S. Bach complete organ works covers the 21 chorales from the ‘Clavierübung’ as well as a various great chorales not belonging to any collection. Like in Volume VII, large format is ideal for these works. Wheras the Chorales from the Clavierübung are included here as a whole, only long miscellaneous chorales have been selected for this volume, the shorter ones being in Volume IX. The content is strongly relying on the BGA edition, but the OrganScore edition has specific features for a number of problematic pieces. As an example, BWV 718 has been transmitted to us by several manuscripts from which two distinct consistent versions can be proposed here. Another example, BWV 741, relies on corrupted manuscripts to a point where the BGA editor (E. Naumann) had made his own reconstruction (reproduced entirely in the appendix), a version which flattens many of the original harmonic audacities. This volume includes a new version of this choral, with correction based both on the analysis of original manuscripts (whose readings are synthesised in a large synopsis in the appendix) and on stylistic grounds. BWV 764, a piece transmitted with an incomplete manuscript, has been completed by the editor. Last but not least, BWV 1128, a recently discovered Bach work (2008) is proposed here in an original edition.
