3D2N Danum Valley Field CentreEx Lahad Datu: Covering 43,800 hectares (438 km²), the Danum Valley Conservation Area is one of the largest and best-protected expanses of pristine lowland rainforest remaining in Southeast Asia. Located in south-eastern Sabah, approximately 70 km inland from Lahad Datu, the Danum Valley Field Centre (DVFC) sits on the eastern edge of this remarkable conservation area.Established in 1986 as a rainforest research facility, DVFC is recognised as one of the leading tropical rainforest research centres in the Old World tropics. Staying here offers a rare opportunity to experience a 130-million-year-old forest ecosystem in its natural, undisturbed state. The lowland tropical rainforest of Danum Valley supports extraordinary biodiversity. It is the only location where the enigmatic spectacled flowerpecker has been recorded.Wildlife in the area includes Bornean orangutans, Müller’s Bornean gibbons, and other primates such as Horsfield’s tarsier. Deer species, wild cats, and the rare Bornean pygmy elephant may also be encountered. The rich insect fauna has long been a focus of research at the Field Centre. Even the land snail population is considered among the richest in the world, with at least 61 species recorded within a single one-kilometre research plot.Flora is dominated by dipterocarp forest typical of Borneo’s lowland rainforest habitat. In some areas, the canopy exceeds 90 metres in height, and the valley is home to one of the tallest recorded tropical trees at 94.1 metres. More than 15,000 plant species occur here, with dipterocarps making up the majority. Pitcher plants can also be found within the forest. The valley itself is bowl-shaped, rising to a maximum elevation of 1,093 metres. Its location near the boundary of secondary forest creates an interesting transition zone, allowing visitors to experience both primary and regenerating jungle. Guided walks including night walks, brings you closer to the sights and sounds of the rainforest.Don’t be fooled into thinking the jungle is quiet, it can be as noisy as a busy city with the different critters trying to outdo each other for attention.
